Hot, Hot, Hot

It was 90 degrees today when we walked/ran! But we did it! It can only get easier from here, right?

Updated: Couch to 5K Week 1

Ed and I are doing a program called 'Couch to 5k.' It's 8 intervals of running, not 6! Week 1 looks like this:

5 minute warm up walking at brisk pace
60 seconds jogging
90 seconds walking
60 seconds jogging
90 seconds walking
60 seconds jogging
90 seconds walking
60 seconds jogging
90 seconds walking
60 seconds jogging
90 seconds walking
60 seconds jogging
90 seconds walking
60 seconds jogging
90 seconds walking
60 seconds jogging
5 minute cool down walking

I hope to do this 3 times before starting Week 2 on Monday. Okay make that before starting Week 2 on Wednesday.

Snag

As a parent of a 5 year old, you can only exercise outdoors when your child is willing to cooperate. Mine is not, so I got in no walk today. Another snag: I can't just go when Ed gets home because he gets home from work when it's time for me to start working and goes to work in the p.m. Aaarrgh!

I'm realizing how very little 'me' time I have.

New Shoes

My walking shoes were (gasp) 4 years old! So as we began our walking regime it was evident that I needed new shoes. So today Ed and I went to Run For Your Life in Charlotte where they put you on a treadmill, video record your movement and watch it on slow motion, then recommend shoes for you based on your bio mechanics and bring out numerous pairs for you to try on the treadmill or even take outside for a quick run. It was a good experience and I left with shoes and socks that I am very comfortable with and feel certain that are much better for my feet.

New Family Fitness Hobby

We went Eco Caching at the National Whitewater Center on July 4 and it was a blast! Everyone enjoyed it, including Fletcher who loved using the GPS, the excitement of the search, and the joy of discovering the cache! So we've done some looking into purchasing a GPS of our own and have bought some trail shoes for Ed and I. We're hopeful that this is something that we can all enjoy doing together and something that we can do locally and on day trips or weekend getaways. It is so important to us to find a family activity that we can do for enjoyment, family connectedness, and physical activity.

I'll keep you posted on our nature walks and eco caching.

Starting Over

Well, here I am again. Back where I was when I started this blog. Overweight with too little exercise. But Ed and I are starting to walk again. His PT has given him the green light to get back to walking and then running. So beginning yesterday we started with walking 30 minutes (about 2 miles for us). We'll walk every day this week and beginning next week we start the 'Couch to 5K' nine week program that is a gradual progression that starts with walking, adds running intervals, and ends with all running for 30 minutes at a time.

We have really enjoyed the two Race for the Cure 5K's that we've walked this year and would love to do more Komen walks/runs as well as other 5K's this year, maybe even being able to run a full 5K by the end of the year.

Long Time, No Post

I'm back. My MIL has challenged Ed and I to match her activity. Ed should have no problem, but unless sweeping my house and chasing tots around counts, then I've got some work to do. I have decided to jump start myself by doing a 14-day cleanse for first-time cleansers. About 3 days ago my skin broke out more horribly than in memory and I have been feeling blah, so i think this might be just the thing. We'd (I'd) kinda fallen back into eating precessed foods and I think that is part of my blah-ness. So my goal is to start the cleanse and eat more whole foods: fish, brown rice, broccoli, beans, fruit, etc. and lots and lots of water! Also, so as not to get one-uped by my MIL, I'll be adding more exercise to my days. It may just be trying to keep up with Fletcher while he rides his bike for now, but it's a start! I'll report here and Linda (MIL) may be using the comments section of this blog to report her own progress. It's own!
